When presenting problems in black and white terms do we harm ourselves by ignoring all the shades of gray?

socrates asked:

For example: I don’t like war at all. I think the idea of humans killing other humans for any reason is just plain stupid. But, if I could wave a magic wand and stop all war right now (no more war…at all…anywhere…ever) what would happen to all of the people who are currently employed by the defense industry? Similarly, I don’t care for using petroleum products as a source of energy. Whether one accepts climate change as a real issue or not I can’t imagine that pumping massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is a good idea in the long run, and considering where most of the oil is located and the volitile, unstable relationships these locations force our nation to form I think we’d be much better off with solar or wind power. But, again, what happens to the people who are employed in the oil industry? Do you think a presidential candidate could be elected on a platform of “No quick, simple fixes. Only gradual, careful, incremental change”?
